I was introduced to the Cinematic Orchestra (by Phil) at University and they became the outfit that led me to discover other acts within the nu-jazz and electronica scene. The Cinematics retain the traditional elements and conventions of jazz music, but seamlessly weave in samples, break-beats and other ingredients more commonly associated with dance music. Combining genius improvisation, synthesized shuffles, minimal melodies and epic grooves, their albums make for a perfect journey through soul, jazz and electronica They toured the world with their re-worked soundtrack to the 1929 Russian film classic 'Man with the Movie Camera'. The Cinematic Orchestra were formed in 1999 and are led by Jason Swinscoe. The band includes saxophonist/pianist Tom Chant, bassist Phil France and drummer Daniel Howard. Jamie Coleman, T. Daniel Howard and Alex James and Luke Flowers have also recorded and played live with the outfit. The latter of which I've met when he played with Leeds-based funk band 'Chunky Butt Funky'. Vocalists who have worked with the Cinematics include Roots Manuva, Niara Scarlett, Fontella Bass and Ricky Rankin. Their music has been used on dozens of TV programmes and Giles Peterson is a loyal fan. I'm lucky enough to have caught them live at Shepherd's Bush and the Barbican in London.
