solo skydiving
at Hinton Skydiving Centre in Oxford

On July 2nd, 2000 at Hinton Skydiving Centre, I joined two friends to complete a solo skydive for Cancer Research UK. Amy Reid, Kirsty Harris and I raised over £1,200 for the charity. Despite landing on the runway, and managing to get 'twists' in the lines of my multicoloured parachute, things otherwise went smoothly and I did another jump in October that year.

Trainees have eight hours intensive training followed by a solo jump from 3,000 feet the following day (weather permitting). First jumps have to be 'static line', meaning the parachute will open automatically - giving very little freefall time. Once you've done your first jump, you can skydive for anything between £20-£35 per jump. If you don't want to do a charity jump, the training and first skydive cost up to and around £200. Tandem skydives (where you're attached to a professional) are also available.
