We run two projects in South India...


East of Bangalore, Ponnai - near Vellore - is our original rural villiage project in Tamil Nadu.

OUR PROJECT IN PONNAI PROVIDES:

  • Educational opportunities for 983 school going children in the age group 6 –16 years, and 1556 children aged 6 to14, so that they may complete their primary education.

  • Rehabilitatiation of hundreds school dropouts in the operational area through formal school enrollment.

  • Vocational training in carpentry, sewing, computer technology, motor driving, electrical appliance maintenance, of 6 months to 2 years duration and referral / placement services for school dropouts in the age group 14 to 18yrs and also for children who have completed higher secondary education.

  • Early childhood education and development through 7 Day care centres (Balwadi) in the operational area.

  • Support in areas such as adult literacy, medical and dental care, community health education, family budget and home economics.

  • The project aims to encourage socio-economic and income generating activities through 47 woman sanghas in order to increase the level of family income ensuring all the child rights like education, health and participation are met.

  • Capacity building training in farm based agricultural and non-farm based agricultural practices (animal husbandry and veterinary science).

  • Community based programmes and develop infrastructures in order to achieve sustainability and self-reliance within the operational area.

THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF:

  • 24 tuition centers established with 1366 children. Supplementary food is given to the children at the centers in order to minimize dropouts and improve academic performance it is also important that there is an option for tuition to take place during the evenings.

  • Our 'Back to School' programme enrolls at least 50 school dropouts yearly and provides a non-formal education/service, which could serve as a platform for formal school enrollment.

  • 22 children's Right Clubs were established with 611 members among the marginal families. Activities of the clubs have been leadership and personality development camps, cultural activities, debate, sports, competitions and drama high lighting the importance of formal education.

  • A Vocational Training Centre imparts skill development training such as carpentry, sewing, computer technology, motor driving, electrical appliance maintenance and industrial training.

  • 7 care centres ensure the right to early childhood education and development for 138 children in the age group 3 to 5 years. Training in capacity building is conducted for day care teachers and mothers in the area of effective parenting skills, child rearing practices and mother and child health care.

  • 47 woman sangha in the operational area have enrolled 1645 women from below poverty line in order to improve their socio-economic condition through training in capacity building, credit facilities, bank linkages and monitoring.

  • Infrastructures have been developed, such as the construction of three community halls and the digging of 2 bore wells in order to prevent water bound diseases within the drinking water system thus ensuring the Right to Health.


In the Southern state of Karnataka, Bangalore is home to our urban slums project.

OUR PROJECT IN BANGALORE PROVIDES:

  • Educational opportunities for 657 school going children in the age group 6 –14 years in order to complete their primary education.

  • Rehabilitatation of hundreds of working children, enabling them to gain access to formal school through non-formal education.

  • Rehabilitatation of street children ensuring all their rights.

  • Inclusive education for visually impaired, physically impaired and working children.

  • Vocational training in carpentry, soft doll making, home appliance production, bouquet making, electrical appliance production, Industrial training courses and referral / placement services among the school dropouts in the age group 14 to 18yrs and also children who have completed higher secondary education.

  • Early childhood education and development through 3 Day care centers (Balwadi) in the operational area ensuring right to development.

  • Support such as adult literacy, medical and dental care, community health education, family budget and home economics.

  • Encourage socio-economic and income generating activities for the families in financial crisis in order to increase the level of family income ensuring all the child rights like education, health and participation are met.

  • Initiation of community based programmes in order to achieve sustainability and self-reliance.

THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF:

  • 3 Tuition Centres established with 167 children.

  • 3 Non-formal Education Centres were established in order to prepare and equip 143 children for formal school enrollment.

  • 3 Children's Right Clubs are established with 240 members. The activities of club have been leadership and personality development camp, cultural activities, debate, sports and outlining the negative effects of child labour.

  • A Vocational Training Centre provides skill development training in areas such as File and envelop making, home appliance repairs and electrical wiring lasting six months. The groups include 50 adolescent girls and 20 dropouts in the age group 14 to 18 years annually.

  • 2 day care Centres, to improve cognitive and motor development of the enrolled children. Capacity building training is conducted for day care teachers and mothers in the area of effective parenting skills, child rearing practices and mother and child Health.

  • There are 3 woman sangha in the operational area enrolling 320 women from below poverty line in order to improve the socio-economic conditions through capacity building trainings, credit facilities, bank linkages and monitoring.

Links have been established with duty bearers, Government Departments, relevant Child Welfare organisations and forums. Such as The Campaign against Child Labour, The Forum for Bangalore Street and Working children, The Forum for Creche and Child Care Services National alliance for Child Rights, The Network for information on Parenting and the Karnataka State Disability Network, etc.
