Known to his staff as 'Tiger', Dr Thiagarajan followed in the footsteps of his father and dedicated himself to improving the material and spiritual lot of villagers in the Ponnai area. The original vision of the founder, the Late Rev. J.D. Balasundram, lives on and work has now expanded into seven different slum areas of Bangalore.

A message from the Late Rev. J.D. Balasundram, founder of DEEDS... "Violations of Human rights continue to occur on a massive scale in many places around the world, affecting the life, liberty, development and welfare of people. The have-nots and the under privileged are constantly affected under current social systems. Unless the social structure is changed, the oppressed community will not have hope. Further, the sad story of their life pattern will continue generation after generation. The refusal to recognise oppressed people as human beings, is a constant source of conflict. Unless they are empowered, this scenario will not change. Therefore, the people's power could be released through our programme design. I have spent the best part of my life in the rural areas as an Educationalist, Supervisor of the Educational Institutions, Pastor and Social Worker. I have witnessed the misery and agony of the oppressed. I often used to reflect by myself and question what was the cause of this misery and agony. My experience and association with the oppressed community convinced me that ignorance, ill-health, poverty and lack of unity are the main root causes that are the stumbling blocks for development of the people. The longest journey starts with a single step. DEEDS has started its journey with a single step and hopes to reach the goal with the help of the people, organisation and Government involvement by extending their support. Therefore, with much concern for the oppressed community, I am appealing to all those who have a similar concern to help our organisation to empower the oppressed community by extending your support in any form. I would like to conclude my message with the quotation: “I shall pass through this world, but once, Accordingly DEEDS has set its goals and formulated its objectives. " |
